This review is by SwellSpy friend Brian Dapelo who lives in Central Florida and has been a ...Lost flow rider for the better part of his life.

He typically surfs around Sebastian and the surrounding area where the waves are usually in the 2-3' range with the occasional chest to overhead days.

This review is the for Sub Driver 2 in Double Dart technology, ...Lost's version of a carbon fiber board.

...Lost Sub Driver 2 Review

Note that for this review, I am providing a review of the Double Dart construction on the Sub Driver 2.

That is important to note because the Double Dart is fully wrapped in carbon fiber, a newer technology in surfboard manufacturing that is evolving and that we have been covering quite often on SwellSpy.

What I liked:

  • Extra buoyant, sits nicely above the water
  • Paddles fast, the carbon material seems to glide across the water resulting in less effort to get into waves than traditional PU or epoxy boards
  • Catches waves like a groveler board yet still allows for tight carves like a high-performance shortboard giving you sort of the best of both worlds.

What I disliked:

  • Not as bulletproof as what I would expect from carbon fiber

My Firsthand Sub Driver 2 Review

Initial Takeaway

Mind: blown. Instantly more responsive, faster, and powerful turns on a 2 foot day where I would have been struggling on every other small wave board.

Yet it still held up a even performed better when I took it out in an overhead hollow day. No issue with too much speed and still caught waves with ease.

Volume Considerations

Pros and rippers should go down about a 1/2 liter to from normal EPS volume boards and 1 whole liter from normal PU boards to make up for the extra float. Decrease those volume recommendations for more average weekend warriors.

Durability

Not as I would hoped, but again performance makes up for it.

Did you consider other options?

No, I wanted this board specifically.

Cost

Carbon fiber technology is an investment more so than other constructions. For me personally, it was well worth it due to the performance benefits I got out of it.

Who is this board recommended for?

Rippers with some extra cash looking for a great small to mid size shortboard to increase their performance.

I would not recommend to beginners or average surfers who are rough on their equipment.
